Location

The Garden Lodge is located in the picturesque village Piperies of Almopia Municipality, just 4,5 km from Aridaia and 9 km from the famous Pozar Baths. From Thessaloniki you can easily come taking the new motorway of Thessaloniki-Edessa and then the provincial road of Mavrovounio-Aridaia-Pozar Baths. Alternatively, you can use the intercity buses (KTEL) that serve all the villages of Almopia region.

Piperies, Pella

Until 1923, the village was populated almost in full by Turkish people that left the village after the Catastrophe of Asia Minor and were replaced by refugee families with the population exchange that followed. The name “Piperies” (=peppers) was given to the village by its new residents that were impressed by the great amount of pepper cultivations they found in the village. More particularly, by the red pepper cultivations from which the village’s household industries used to produce “bukovo” (=chili flakes).

The refugees, in turn, brought to the village their knowledge of grape cultivation. Αs a result, viticulture remains until today one of the main activities of the village.
Furthermore, Piperies produces jams, fruit jellies, compotes, pickles, pasta…and exceptional “tsipouro” (=a Greek alcoholic spirit). You can taste and buy a lot of the local products at the village’s agricultural association.

In fact, due to the pure, traditional tsipouro that the village produces, there is a big celebration in the beginning of November. As anyone would expect, at this party you will find plenty of tsipouro, accompanied of course by various local dishes, festivities and traditional dancing.

The church of Piperies hosts a really important historical artifact: a 12th-century painting of the Assumption Day. This picture “traveled” all the way from the village Yenice in Asia Minor and was considered miraculous for many years. For its sake, it has long been common for the village to throw a big festival, the most popular in the wider area, on the 15th of August. The last years, the celebration of Saint Mary on the 14th and 15th of August seems to have revived thanks to the initiative of the local Cultural Association and the support of Aridaia’s Municipality.
